Best DVD player for parents
(November 11, 2004)

I want to get my parents a DVD player (bring them into the 21st century), but which one should I get? They don't need the fanciest picture, but I want it to look nice.

Bypass the $29 specials you see at the drug store and go with an entry-level model from a trusted manufacturer: the Panasonic DVD-S47S is our top bargain choice, but the Sony DVP-NS575P/S and the Philips DVP642 are also solid players.
Don't hesitate to go with whichever one is the most affordable. If you're willing to spend a bit more, consider a DVD/VCR combo. Your parents will probably appreciate the convenience of using one box--and one remote--for all of their home video needs.
