Which laptop should I ask for?
(October 22, 2004)

I need a lower-end notebook to do the basics (e-mail, Web browsing, a little document and spreadsheet stuff, and so on). I don't want a $2,000 high-end notebook. What should I ask for? Or better yet, what specs should I get so that my machine stays useful, but not cutting edge, for the next year or two?

You're looking for a mainstream or budget laptop--something with the performance and the features that you actually need without all the stuff you don't.
You'll want a system with specs such as these:
 Value mobile processor
 Intel Pentium 4 2GHz
 Intel Celeron 2GHz
 AMD Athlon XP-M 2GHz
 Base amount of memory
Smaller hard drive (40GB or so)
 CD-RW/DVD combo drive
Whatever you choose, make sure it comes loaded with Windows XP Home and a productivity suite.
