The Bottom Line The design remains the same, but under the hood Apple's MacBook Pro laptops received a jolt by way of faster processors, a new chipset, and--depending on the screen size--either new screen technology or the option for a higher resolution. Those pining for a 12-inch MacBook Pro will need to continuing waiting, but there's nothing to complain about for the updated 15- and 17-inch models, which offer improved specs at the same starting prices. Apple has been content to issue minor periodic hardware updates to the 13-inch MacBook, but the modest performance gains and new Leopard OS keep it in our top tier of laptop recommendations. Apple's 15-inch MacBook Pro gets a solid under-the-hood upgrade for better performance and longer battery life, allowing the MacBook Pro to put enough distance between itself and the lower-end MacBook to justify its higher price. Apple's redesigned 13-inch MacBook is essentially a shrunken version of the more expensive 15-inch Pro line. With its new aluminum body, new trackpad, and Nvidia graphics, it's an even more attractive choice for mainstream laptop buyers than was the plastic model it replaces. A solid, if predictable, upgrade to the MacBook Pro line, but noteworthy for stealing the MacBook Air's best feature--expanded gesture controls for the touch pad.
