You can get an entry-level dSLR for a couple hundred bucks less, but do you want to? These models generally deliver better performance and photo quality then their slightly cheaper counterparts, and don't cost much more, even equipped with a kit lens.

| The Bottom Line | Nikon scores big with the D80, its new 10-megapixel, sub-$1,000 dSLR. | It doesn't stand out for its feature set or design, but the Canon EOS Rebel XSi delivers on performance and photo quality. | Pentax's K200D entry-level SLR gives a lot of bang for the buck and has better performance than last year's model.
