In-flight entertainment: Travel-worthy MP3 players and PVPs

When you're gearing up for air travel, be sure to pack some digital entertainment along with your travel pillow. An MP3 player or a PVP can help you while away the hours spent in airport terminals or crammed into your airplane seat--just make sure you bring a gadget with a decent battery life or a user-replaceable battery. Consider the Cowon D2, a versatile MP3 player with a killer battery life and great photo and video support, or the Samsung YP-K5, which offers not only an excellent 32-hour battery but also a built-in speaker for down time in the hotel room. Need more video? Check out the wide-screen Creative Zen Vision:W, which offers an ample 60GB of storage and an easily replaceable battery for extended viewing. Or for the ultimate high-end portable video experience, there's the extravagant Archos AV500. Finally, there's the Sony PSP: It's not exactly in the MP3/PVP category, but it plays music and video. For those working on more of a budget, there are plenty of more music-centric options, including the Insignia MP3 Player & Image Viewer (with user-removable battery) and the 60-hour Cowon iAudio 7.

The Bottom Line If you can get on board with the Cowon D2's PDA-like touch screen interface, the reward is great-sounding audio, a smorgasbord of features, and a fantastic battery life. The Samsung YP-K5 is a unique MP3 player with a fun interface and great sound quality; it may be bulky around the middle, but it's an excellent choice if you want to share your tunes at the drop of a dime. The bulky but easy-to-use Creative Zen Vision W and its nice screen will dazzle video lovers who don't require video recording. Measurable bulk and pricey 160GB version aside, the do-it-all Archos 504 is an awesome A/V performer. The affordable Insignia MP3 Player & Photo Viewer offers a wide array of features as well as a graphically-pleasing, user-friendly interface, making it a solid choice for budget-conscious users and first-timers. The Cowon iAudio 7 beats the industry heavyweight iPod Nano in price, features, battery life, and sound quality. The user interface could use some refinement, but all-in-all this is a very impressive MP3 player.
