All of the major Windows PC vendors have improved their desktop designs lately, but after today's iMac redesign announcement, Apple has distanced itself even further from its competition. The trimmer, sleeker iMac, and especially its new keyboard, cut a cleaner profile than any of this year's new PCs from Dell, Gateway, HP, or Sony.

Apple's new iMac takes the lead in desktop design.
(Credit: Apple)Looks matter of course, but so does value. And with this update, Apple appears to have shed its reputation for going beyond its competition in terms of price. If you compare component for component, you'll find that Dell and Gateway, in particular, offer competitive configs to Apple's new lineup. You lose an aesthetic step or two with those traditional Windows desktops, but worse, you also miss out on the iMac's strong iLife '08 software suite, which eliminates the PCs' price advantage.
Thanks to the various virtualization apps and Apple's own Boot Camp, you also can't really argue that by going with a Mac you're locked into the Apple ecosystem. The new iMacs and their all-in-one design don't solve the lack of upgradability, but we're willing to bet that doesn't effect that many mainstream computer buyers. Our bigger concern is the upgrade path to Leopard, Apple's OS X update later this Fall. Apple has not said whether it will charge new or existing Mac owners to upgrade to the new operating system. That would make us extracautious about purchasing a new Mac now, knowing that we might save $129 or so on an OS upgrade if we wait a few months.

Everything I ever wanted in a computer!

Summary: I have used Macs for years for my job, and when this aluminum 24" came out I HAD to have one for home. Especially with the new Leopard OSX. Had a bit of trouble when installing some hardware I had on my old Mac with that was OSX 10.4, but I just downloaded new drivers from the various manufacturers and was ready to go. The new glass style monitor is beautiful, especially for graphic design/photo applications. Factory installed features are fantastic, the aluminum design is beautiful. I was skeptical about the flat keyboard at first, but am getting used to it, now I love it. I upgraded to 4GB memory, and can run Quark Express and Photoshop at the same time with no problems! I can't say enough good about it. Keep up the great work Apple!

Summary: The best, fastest and most easy to get around desktop I've ever had. I'm also running 4GB Ram & Mac Office 2008, which gives me all those extra bits and pieces I need. Would recommend the 24" to anyone and buying a "Teach Yourself Visually" book on Leopard, it makes life much, much easier.

Pros: Extremely simple setup, elegant design, runs Vista, iLife is amazing.
Cons: Couldn't easily find simple info for someone not familiar with Macs. e.g. how to maximize a window, explanation of the dock, basic stuff.

Summary: I was looking to get a new PC but then found out that Safari just came out and Bootcamp runs Vista. I had been contemplating getting a Mac for a while from all the good things I had heard and it seemed like a no brainer after spending an hour messing with one in Best Buy. I ended up purchasing Windows Vista Home Premium version to install on it.
From the time I opened the box to when I pushed the power button was less than two minutes. Setup was extremely simple. One cord to plug in and two USB cords to plug in (one from the keyboard into the Mac and one from the Mighty Mouse into the keyboard). I had never experienced anything like this before.
I ended up installing Vista which was pretty straight forward, no problems...just took a while to copy the files because it's so big. Vista works perfectly and the new Mighty Mouse does have a right click button for Windows use! Something I wasn't aware of. Vista works great on it and performs very well so far.
I'm still getting used to Leopard but I'm getting there. The only thing I can complain about is there is no "dummy's guide" for a life long Windows user like me. Although I found everything I need from Google searches (hold command and click the green maximize button to maximize a window, and use command+Q to quit a program and not just close it).
iLife is really cool and easy to use. Garage band is amazing as is iMovie. It's unbelievable the quality results you can get from such easy to use tools.
I'm extremely glad I went with the iMac and see myself splitting about 50/50 between Vista and Leopard, but it will be interesting to see how that pans out. Apple was smart developing Bootcamp to run Windows to attract users like me that probably wouldn't have bought one otherwise. An excellent product, another bonus was the remote control which at time of purchase I didn't know was coming with it.
Note: Because I was going to run Vista I had the Geek Squad add another gig of RAM to get it to 2 gigs. I would have installed it myself but they made it sound difficult "because there are no screws". I found out once I got home I could have easily installed it myself and saved myself $40 for their 2 minutes of work. If you know how to add RAM to a PC you can add to an iMac as well. If you're going to run Vista be sure to have 2 gigs or more, it is extremely RAM intensive though with enough it runs well. -

Summary: I used to own a mac a long time ago.. I had an old LCIII back in the day and i loved it. I had to switch to windows because of work and now i've finally decided to ditch the vista machine. My first reaction was "WOW" I can't believe how far macs have come since i've owned one. I can't say enough about how intuitive leopard is and what a joy it is to use. If you are considering a mac, don't consider... BUY ONE!!

I admit it, I am a former PC user. I love my new iMac
by horstpichler on August 22, 2007
Pros: Great performance, awsome OS, iLife 08, NO CABLES under my desk, just gorgeous

Summary: My third daughter was born just a couple of month ago, and she will be mobile soon. With my old PC which had around a billion cables coming out of the back I was scared that this would not be safe for a baby.
That was the official line to convince my wife that I had to buy a new computer. After all it is about the safety of our baby.
Well I could not have gotten any better machine. Besides having no cluttered cables anymore and not ugly box, I also got a very powerful machine with an awesome software package.
I started to play with iLife, and iDVD especially. What took me hours on my PC just took my minutes with this great piece of SW. Creating DVD's for my family back in Europe become fun now instead of something I hated. With iWeb it took me just minutes to create a basic homepage for my family, and it looks professional and not just like something i put together in minutes.
Well so far i love my iMac. If there would be a button to get coffee out of it too, I would give it a 10 out of 10. -
Fantastic, semi-pro powerful machine.

Summary: Being a Mac user for about 7 years, I've been an early adopter for quite a while. I sold my old 24" iMac (gen3) to purchase this new machine. There's not a big reason to upgrade if you're a Generation 3 iMac owner, but for users of older machines (or new switchers), the new iMac is a beautiful machine. It's quite fast, powerful, is upgradable to boot (for iMac standards), and can even pack a 1TB drive. Downside is the ATI video card is quite weak - and is a slap in the face to gamers who want an all-in-one Mac. All in all, I'm quite pleased with this machine, and is the second best looking Mac I've ever had on my desk (second only to the fantastic iMac G4).

The BEST desktop around!
by texasags on August 15, 2007
Pros: Best OS interface, fast, great screen, keyboard, mouse, etc...
Cons: Would like to see Virtualization software included, nothing else

Summary: I finally broke down and bought an iMac, and I am so happy. My wife even loves it, and she hates changing computers, much less operating systems. Everything is straightforward and elegant, yet very powerful. It recognized all my old peripherals without installing software, even my wireless printer (which took about a half hour to set up on Windows XP).
The screen is awesome and glare is not an issue; the computer faces a window, so this is the worst case situation. It took about a day to get used to the keyboard, and the mouse can be customized to your liking (it even has a right click function, even though there is no right button).
I downloaded "The Missing Sync", and my wife's Dell PDA syncronized with iCal and Address book with no problems. It even displays the battery life, which is something "Activesync" doesn't do. In addition, "The Missing Sync" has no trouble "seeing" the PDA, which we can't say for Activesync; sometimes, we would have to take the PDA in and out of the cradle several times before it would be recognized.
I will be running a Virtualization software package (VMWare or Parallels) for some programs we use that are Windows only. That is the most significant feature for those who fear switching; you can still run Windows if need be. There is no good reason not to switch.
I thing this computer is a good deal for the money. It can do everything you need within OS X, and if you need to run Windows, you can. I priced machines running Windows, and for equivalent hardware, there is not much difference and, in many cases, the iMac was cheaper. When you figure the built-in software, it's no contest.
Of course, this is all just my opinion, but I couldn't be happier.
