- Rough and tumble: Eight handsets for the adventurous (pictures)
Samsung Rugby 3 (AT&T)
Let's face it, many of us have either lost, or nearly lost, a handset because of an accidental dunk in the pool or a tumble on the sidewalk. To make sure you can avoid this next time, CNET rounded up some favorite waterproof or rugged devices that'll let you take on the outdoors (or the next pool party) with a little bit more ease.
Let's begin with the Samsung Rugby 3 from AT&T. Though its call quality was unimpressive, this compact feature phone is waterproof and tough. It also has a comfortable, responsive key pad and push-to-talk capabilities.
Editors' note: This slideshow was originally published on February 13, 2013, and was updated on April 3, 2013, with additional devices.
The good: The Samsung Rugby 3 has a terrifically responsive dial pad and enhanced push-to-talk support.
The bad: Audio quality was subpar, the shared headset/charger jack is inconvenient, and for a durable phone, the body could be grippier.
The bottom line: Very poor call quality is especially unacceptable on a simple cell phone. Unless you require AT&T's push-to-talk service, keep looking.
