Tailgating must-have gadgets

The NFL season is in full swing, which hopefully means your tailgating efforts, too, are hitting their stride. With only eight home dates on the schedule, it's important that you and your team never take a Sunday off. It wasn't too long ago that the only items you saw in a parking lot of an NFL stadium were plumes of smoke from grills stationed behind cars, coolers filled with frosty beverages, and footballs flying through the air. Perhaps you brought along a radio to listen to the pregame show before heading in to your seats. Today's tailgaters are bringing an increasing amount of technology to the party. Here are some items that might give your tailgates a high-tech kick this season.

DirecTV Sat-Go

If you subscribe to DirecTV's NFL Sunday Ticket, you're sure to draw a crowd with the DirecTV Sat-Go, a portable satellite receiver/LCD unit that let you and those tailgating near you watch all the games. You're sure to elicit oohs and aahs from the crowd as you unfold the brown suitcase-like carrier to reveal the 17-inch LCD.

Slingbox AV

Those without a satellite subscription or $1,000 to throw at a 26-pound satellite-in-a-suitcase mobile unit can simple stream the feed from their home cable box with a much more economical Slingbox. All you need to take with you is a device with broadband Internet access--laptop or smartphone--to tune into your favorite pregame show or whatever else might be on the tube at home.

Sirius Stiletto 100 satellite radio

With this portable Sirius satellite radio, you can listen to any and all NFL games. Though you're likely to focus on the home team while inside the stadium, you can take a swing around the league to check up on your fantasy football players.

LCD TV with integrated DVD

If you are really serious about bring the living-room experience to the parking lot (and own a large vehicle), get yourself an HDTV and a portable satellite dish. Attend your team's 1 p.m. game, and then while the lines of cars leaving the lot grown, sit back and take in a 4 p.m. game on the spot--extend the tailgating experience! We chose this model because an LCD will have less glare than a glossy plasma, and this Westinghouse set features a built-in DVD player--perfect for queuing up select titles from the NFL Films library.

Ladder golf

Don't have an NFL caliber arm? Instead of tossing the ol' pigskin around, join the other Chad Penningtons of the world and engage in a friendly game of ladder golf (or, alternately, bean bag toss). Think of these games as safer versions of horseshoes or lawn darts--better for crowded parking lots.

Sony PSP

No interest in ladder golf? Then toss a Sony PSP in the car along with Madden NFL 09 for a Sunday trifecta of video football, fantasy football, and actual NFL football.

Freedom grill

There's a rule written somewhere that a tailgate without grilled meats isn't a tailgate. While any grill aficionado will tell you a charcoal grill is the preferred grilling method, an exception can be made for tailgating. A gas grill heats up quick, won't make a mess of your car, and cools down by the final whistle so that you can safely return home. There are any number of gas grills, but the Freedom grill is particularly suited for the task of tailgating.

Canon PowerShot SD790 IS

Don't forget to pack a camera to capture the action inside the stadium and out. While an entry-level dSLR might be tempting, we recommend a point-and-shoot model because A. it's compact and B. it's more likely to last from the opening weekend of the season through (hopefully) the playoffs. The Canon PowerShot SD790 IS is a good option, as is the Sony's tiny Cyber-shot DSC-T700. We'd also recommend you protect your digital imaging investment with a camera bag.

Verizon G'zOne Boulder

You'll need a good cell phone to keep tabs on all the action on Sunday and its implications from your hometown team and fantasy team(s). The Verizon G'zOne Boulder is up to the task by serving up 3G network support (EV-DO Rev. A, if you're scoring at home), Verizon's V Cast Video, and a camera--all inside a rugged, military-grade shell.
