Digital video recorders
If your job requires that you keep up with competitors' TV commercials, stay hip to the latest teen craze, or keep on top of international events, you may be able to claim your digital video recorder (DVR). A DVR such as TiVo puts the most important shows on a hard drive, so you can watch them when you have time--say, after you finish an important client meeting. If you create a lot of presentations and need raw video to spruce up your work, having a digital recorder is a great way to catch live TV footage. All you do is pick the program, edit the section you want, and import it into PowerPoint. Says Leo L. Marzen, a top New York tax preparer, "Look for features that enhance the device for work, like the ability to screen out commercials or save video." If you're in the market for a new PC anyway, consider investing in a Media Center PC, which lets you record TV and copy it onto a CD or a DVD.
