THIS WEEK: HANDHELDS: NOT JUST FOR WORK ANYMORE?

PDA buyers really show their age by how they plan to use a handy handheld. Users ages 35 to 54 with annual incomes between $50,000 and $150,000 make up 40 percent of likely handheld buyers and mainly want a PDA to access contacts (64 percent) and manage time (58 percent). A mere 6 percent say they plan to use one to play games; 7 percent plan to listen to music.

Meanwhile, the number of younger users is on the rise; those aged 25 to 34 make up 18 percent of prospective PDA buyers, up from 14 percent in August. And while they rate time management and contact access highly, they rate playing games (36 percent) and listening to music (40 percent) even higher. This group wants to have fun and get the job done.
