Digital Home DIYStep-by-step guides that make home tech projects easy

Digitize your compact discs

Let's face it: CDs are inconvenient. Those 5-inch discs used to feel so high tech, but compared to your iPod, which can hold thousands of songs, they're a bulky mess waiting to be cleaned up. We'll tell you how to turn CDs into bits on your hard drive.

Why you should digitize your compact discs

What the editors say
1

CDs hog shelf space.

If you're like most folks born between 1960 and 1990, you have a hundred or more CDs. Each one is about 1/3 inch thick and 5 inches tall and wide, and together they represent a serious chunk of shelf. Digitizing your music can reclaim that space.

2

Create a 1,000-disc changer.

Sure, you can buy a CD jukebox that holds 400 discs, but it's a clunky monster that takes forever between songs and requires manual loading and labeling. A computerized jukebox can be set to Random and will segue without delay, and classification is automatic.

3

Organize your tunes.

With your music on a fat hard drive, you'll never have to paw through crates of dusty discs to find that one song. You can sort music by album, artist, title, or genre and search through the tunes to instantly find the one you want to hear.
