I need advice on an inexpensive router that can work with my Acer Aspire 1681WLCi wireless laptop and an eMachines wired desktop, which both use Windows XP. And once I have the wireless router, do I need any other equipment for my laptop in order for it to sync? The laptop came set up for wireless.

Just about any basic and inexpensive 802.11b/g wireless router will work for you. Most routers on the market are combination router-cable/DSL modems and also serve as access points, so that's all you'll need, as your notebook already has a built-in wireless radio.
If you want to keep the eMachines PC on a wired connection, you'll want to put the router in the same room as the PC so that it can be easily plugged into the router's Ethernet ports (or you'll have to run cables through your house, which can be a pain). On the other hand, it's not difficult to make the PC wireless. If you're willing to crack open the PC case, you can install a wireless PCI adapter. If you're not into plumbing the depths of your PC's guts, an easier alternative is a wireless USB adapter that plugs right into an available USB port.
