Camping: get the gear you need

Today's poll:
Which gear is a must-have for this trip?
Digital camera
GPS device
MP3 player
Portable speakers
Teched-out SUV

Though camping tends to be a summer activity, mild spring and fall months are a perfect time to take in the beauty of nature. Heck, even winter camping can be fun (not to mention challenging). Regardless of the season during which you choose to make your home in the wilderness, the right gear can make all the difference. Below, you'll find our top tech choices for your next campout.

SUV
Whether you're headed off the beaten path or sticking strictly to the paved and marked roads of the National Parks system, our vehicle of choice is still an SUV. Why? Because if worse comes to worst ("Hmm, now where did I put that fourth tent pole"), you can always bed down in the back.

GPS device
A GPS device is not only a smart addition to your day pack when exploring the terrain around your campsite, it can also prove invaluable when you're trying to find the campground. Pick one that can be used on foot and in the car so that you'll always know your exact coordinates.

Digital camera
You're sure to come across plenty of beautiful vistas on this trip, so don't forget to slip a compact camera into a backpack pocket. Bonus: most modern digital cameras can capture video, too; be sure to start rolling when a curious bear comes sniffing into camp. Now, you'll have proof when your friends scoff at your claim.

MP3 player
The sounds of nature can be soothing, but it's nice to break up the monotony with some mood music while cooking your dinner over an open flame. Sure, an acoustic guitar will do the trick, but will it fit in your pocket? Flash-based MP3 players are the best for the outdoors, since they can withstand a lot of jostling.

Portable speakers
Of course, if the whole group wants to enjoy the tunes, a single pair of headphones won't do. Instead, grab a compact, battery-powered speaker system to plug into your player. Make sure you keep the volume at a respectable level so that you don't bother other campers in the area--or just invite them over to join your open-air party.
