Choosing a Web site host
Best practice #6: Select the features
Certain features--such as e-mail, scripting, and security--should be standard with your hosting account. If there are features you need, don't compromise on them. Odds are very good that if the hosting provider you are looking at doesn't offer them, another one will.

Must-have features
We recommend that you use a host with these minimum features. You may not need all of them right away, but make sure they are included or available before you commit to a hosting provider.
  • SSL capability (for secure pages)
  • PERL/PHP/MySQL installation by default
  • Dedicated CGI-bin (Common Gateway Interface) for scripts
  • Credit card authorization capability
  • Shell access via SSH (Secure Shell)
  • Web-based control panel for managing users and account settings
  • Detailed statistics and server logs
  • Server Side Includes for page templating
  • POP and Web mail with spam blocking
  • Guaranteed uptime of 99.9 percent or better
  • Customer support available via e-mail and telephone
  • Operating system and software patch management

Nice-to-have features
As you move forward with your online presence, you'll find that the Web offers a number of options for collaborating, modifying business processes, and revamping your business as a whole. Check to see how your potential host deals with these emerging features.
  • Support for wiki and other collaboration tools
  • Support for blogs and other new publishing tools
  • Upgrade path for features, such as backup and recovery
  • Upgrade path for additional bandwidth as needed
  • Upgrade path for additional disk space
  • IMAP mail access
  • Content management system
