    America Online, the world's largest provider of Internet services, and German media giant Bertelsmann AG announced that they have named Andreas Schmidt to be the new president and CEO of AOL Bertelsmann Europe. The joint venture between AOL and Bertelsmann is the largest pan-European Internet online service provider with more than 2.2 million AOL and CompuServe members. Schmidt was most recently managing director of the magazine publisher "am Fleetrand."

    German media giant Bertelsmann AG sold 1 million shares of America Online stock, Bloomberg reported. The sale is not the first time Bertelsmann has unloaded AOL stock. In February Bertelsmann sold 900,000 shares of AOL stock, worth more than $114 million. The international publishing company now holds about 4.4 million shares in AOL. The two firms are involved in joint ventures in Europe and Australia.
